July 2019 News from Delphine's Quilt Shop, LC

Delphine's Quilt Shop, LC
“Piecing the past and the present into the heirlooms of tomorrow!"
114 N. Otsego Ave.Gaylord, MI 49735 - 989-732-1252 www.delphinesquiltshop.com/
www.facebook.com/delphinesquiltshop

The shop was closed on July 4th, but will be open 10-6 on Friday the 5th and 10-4 on Saturday the 6th.

The Row by Row Experience for 2019 has started.  Our free pattern will be an 18" block called "Sunbonnet Sue visits the Blueberry Patch".   Delphine made the sample with fusible applique but if you want to do hand turned applique that would work also.  We even have a companion pattern and kit for Overall Bill at the Raspberry Patch.  Printed panels of the block center will be available to purchase for those who prefer to not applique.

Visit the Row by Row website at https://rowbyrowexperience.com for all the details.  The website has links to all the Rows or Blocks being offered by shops through out the world.  Since you can only get the free pattern by going into the shop you'll want to narrow your choices to where you will be traveling this summer :)

Gaylord Alpenfest will be happening from Tuesday, July 7th to Saturday July 13th.
When you purchase a $5.00 pin, which gets you into several Free food events and concerts, you are also entered into a drawing for a $500.00 Downtown Merchants Association Gift Certificate!  And yes, you can spend it all at Delphine's :)  Not only that but the ticket stub has many coupons for discounts at DMA shops including Delphine's.  My discount, during the festival is Buy 1 item, get another of equal value at 30% off!

On Friday, July 19th the shop is hosting a fundraiser work session for our Patriotic quilters and Comfort quilters.  If you can sew a straight line, you can help us!  The project is Infinity scarves for GreenStone Farm Credit Services.  They have purchased the fabric and will make a donation to the groups for making 200+ scarves.  Please consider joining us this day to sew up the scarves.  Please bring white thread and your machine's walking foot, if it has one.  Sewing will begin at 10:30am.

Lunch will be provided by the shop.

A Request (HELP, PLEASE!) and a Thank You from our Patriotic Sewers!

Several people have stepped up and quilted tops for this group and we Thank you.  But we continue to have a need for long arm quilters, so  if you haven't offered to quilt a top but would like to,  we can still use quilters.  Please contact the shop at 989-732-1252 if you are able to help.

We can also use folks to sew on binding and do piecework.   You can meet with the groups on their Sewing Days or work from home.

Recipe of the Month

Mandarin Salad
Makes: 4-6 servings

1/4 cup sliced almonds (or more, since they are so good)
1 Tbsp plus 1 tsp sugar
1/4 head iceberg lettuce, torn
1/4 head torn romaine lettuce
1 cup celery, chopped
2 green onions, sliced
1 can mandarin orange segments, drained
Salad topping
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 Tbsp each of sugar and vinegar
1 Tbsp fresh parsley
1/2 tsp salt
Dash of pepper

Cook the almonds and sugar over low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar has melted and the almonds are coated.  Cool and break apart the mixture.   Place both types of lettuce, celery and the onions in a large bag.  Mix the salad dressing ingredients together and pour into the bag along with the orange segments.  Close the bag tightly and shake until the greens and orange segments are well coated.  Add the caramelized almonds and shake. Serve!
